Asthma and Allergies - Is the Chlorine in Your Shower Affecting You?

Everyday, most of us get up in the morning and take a shower. This is a typical beginning of a day for just about all of us. But wait, a shower in unfiltered water, I wonder if that could be aggravating my asthma or allergies? It is important that all of us step back and think about this. You ask, why should I do this? I remember the last time I went to Universal and stayed in a local hotel. The smell of chlorine was so strong in the sink and the shower that it made me gag. I will never go back to that hotel.

First, if you think about it, we drink bottled water or filter your drinking and cooking water but why do you take a bath in unfiltered water. Have you ever thought of the consequences of doing this, or how it is affecting your asthma or allergies? If you did, you would realize that a typical shower can expose you to high levels of chlorine than you would would ever receive by drinking the same unfiltered tap water. Would you knowingly put harmful chemicals and pollutants into your body? Then you need to think about what you are doing.

If you do a little research on the Internet on sites such as Dr. Mercola, you will see, by doing this you possibly expose yourself to chlorine, chloroform, trichloroethylene (TCE), and hydrogen sulfide when you take a shower. We do not know all the health consequences but these chemicals have been implicated in cancer, respiratory illness, liver and kidney disease, and a whole lot of other health problems.

The next time you take a hot steaming shower, remember that possible toxic chemicals can be liberated from the water and released into gasses which can include chloroform and trichloroethylene which are both carcinogenic. When the steam is inhaled, you are inhaling vaporized chlorine if your shower is not filtered. Do I have your attention yet? I hope so because if you do not filter your shower, why bother to drink bottled or filtered water.

According to Wilkipedia: Chlorine is a powerful oxidant and is used in bleaching and disinfectants. It is a common disinfectant. Chlorine is used in swimming pools to keep the levels of algae and bacteria down. In the upper atmosphere, chlorine-containing molecules have been implicated, but not proven to cause damage to the ozone layer. Basically, it is an oxidizing agent used to disinfect drinking water to reduce or eliminate microorganisms such as bacteria, algae and viruses.
